Hi, I am Kinzang Choden

I am a 3rd year Business Intelligence student who completed my internship at Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd (BDS) — Bhutan's leading data science company focused on building data literacy and analytical capability across the country.

During my internship I designed and developed this project from scratch — from collecting 113 survey responses, cleaning the data using Python, building 12 interactive Tableau visualizations, aligning findings with Bhutan's GNH values, and publishing everything as a live website on GitHub Pages.

This project is called DrukShift — named after Bhutan's identity as the Land of the Thunder Dragon and our shift toward the future of digital finance. I believed cryptocurrency readiness in Bhutan is not just a technology question — it is a happiness question.

Barrier: Internet
🇧🇹 Why DrukShift Exists

A Story About One Woman,
One Quiz, One Village

This is not just a research project. This is a story about what happens when one curious person gets the right information — in their own language, about their own life.

Bhutan mountains morning
01
The Problem

She Lost a Sale.
Because of a Knowledge Gap.

Imagine Deki — a 34 year old textile weaver in Paro who crafts beautiful Kishuthara silk by hand. A tourist wants to buy. They have no cash. She cannot accept digital payment.

The tourist walks away. This happens every week. Not because Deki is not smart. Not because she is not ready. But because no one ever explained cryptocurrency to her — in her language, in terms of her life.

"The information existed. But it was complicated, in a foreign language, and felt very far away from Paro."
02
The Discovery

What If Bhutan
Had Its Own Answer?

This question is what drove the DrukShift research project — built by a Bhutanese student, for Bhutanese people, during her internship at Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd.

113 real Bhutanese adults were surveyed — weavers, farmers, students, shopkeepers, government workers. Asked 10 honest questions about what they know, what they trust, and what they fear about cryptocurrency.

The results were surprising. Bhutan is 80% ready. The knowledge exists. The willingness is there. The barriers are specific — and fixable.

"We did not need to look to Silicon Valley for answers. The answers were already here — in Bhutan."

The Findings

Three Things Standing
Between Bhutan and the Future

The data revealed that Bhutan's readiness gap is not about willingness — it is about three very specific and very solvable barriers.

Internet infrastructure
🌐

Internet is Barrier #1

Poor internet connectivity — especially in rural Bhutan — is the single biggest obstacle to safe crypto adoption. You cannot transact safely on an unstable connection.

Infrastructure
Digital education
📚

High Awareness, Low Understanding

96% of Bhutanese adults have heard of cryptocurrency — but most only have surface level knowledge. Awareness without understanding is the most dangerous combination.

Education
Security and trust
🛡️

The Scam Vulnerability Gap

The 35–44 age group has the highest trust in crypto but the lowest security awareness — the most dangerous combination. They are the most likely targets for scammers.

Security
Bhutan landscape

Back to Deki.
She Took the Quiz.

She scored 58%. The quiz did not judge her. It gave her a personalised plan — because she rated her personal readiness as 2 out of 10, her next step was clear. She followed it. Weeks later the same tourist returned. This time she showed a QR code. The payment went through. She smiled.

One quiz. One woman. One village. This is how Bhutan shifts — not all at once, but one person at a time.

5 Solutions to Improve
Crypto Readiness in Bhutan

Based on 113 survey responses, these five targeted solutions address the real barriers identified in the data — from education gaps to scam vulnerability.

01
🎓

Close the Education Gap

Run targeted crypto literacy programs for 35-54 and 55+ age groups. Young people need digital platforms. Older generations need community workshops and face to face education in local languages.

02
🌐

Fix Internet Infrastructure First

Poor internet is barrier number one. The government must expand reliable and affordable internet to rural and semi-urban areas before pushing crypto adoption. Connectivity is a prerequisite — not a luxury.

03
🛡️

Protect Vulnerable Groups from Scams

The 35-44 group has the highest trust and lowest security concern — the perfect target for scammers. Launch dedicated scam awareness campaigns with simple clear messaging about red flags and how to stay safe.

04
🏛️

Government Must Lead on Governance

People are already asking for government support. Create clear cryptocurrency regulations, establish consumer protection laws, and build a transparent framework. Strong government leadership is the single most powerful accelerator of adoption in Bhutan.

05
🤝

Start With Communities — Let Adoption Grow Naturally

The majority said Maybe — not No. These undecided people are waiting to see crypto work in real life. Encourage local shops and small businesses to accept crypto as payment. When people see their favorite restaurant using crypto safely — it becomes real, relatable and trustworthy.

1,000 Merchants. Almost Zero Tourists. Why?

Bhutan became the world's first country to launch a national crypto tourism payment system in May 2025. Over 1,000 merchants registered. But nearly a year later — almost nobody is using it. These are the real documented problems and what can be done.

⚠️ Real Problems
Problem 01
Tourists Do Not Know the Option Exists
Most tourists arrive in Bhutan with no idea that over 1,000 merchants accept cryptocurrency. There is no information at the airport, no mention in visa documents and no push notification when they land. The system exists but tourists simply never find out about it.
Source — Trade Brains, February 2026
Problem 02
Merchants Never Tell Tourists About It
"It has been four to five months but no customer has used it until now. No one knows that we accept cryptocurrency and Binance Pay." — Sonam Dorji, Lotus Peak Enterprise, Le Meridien Thimphu.
Source — Rest of World, March 2026
Problem 03
QR Codes Are Sitting Untouched
Across Thimphu QR codes sit untouched at hotel counters and cafe tables. For most merchants the system exists on paper not in practice. Merchants were given a QR code but no training or confidence to use it.
Source — Trade Brains, February 2026
Problem 04
Tourists Must Already Have Binance
The system requires tourists to be existing Binance users. A tourist who does not already have a Binance account set up before arriving in Bhutan cannot use the system at all — even if they want to.
Source — Lightspark, 2026
Problem 05
Internet Reliability in Remote Areas
In remote tourist areas outside Thimphu and Paro internet connectivity is slow or unstable. Crypto payments require a stable connection to confirm. This remains a real barrier especially in areas like Punakha and Bumthang.
Source — GoBhutanTours, 2025
Real Solutions
Solution 01
Merchants Receive Ngultrum — Not Crypto
All Binance Pay payments are instantly converted to Ngultrum through DK Bank. Merchants never actually hold crypto or face price volatility. They simply receive Ngultrum in their account just like a normal bank transfer. This already works — merchants just do not know it.
Source — TravelAcrossBhutan, 2026
Solution 02
Zero Fees for Tourist Payments
Tourist crypto payments through Binance Pay have no added transaction fees. Unlike credit cards which charge merchants 2 to 3 percent per transaction Binance Pay costs nothing. This is a real financial benefit that most merchants are not aware of.
Source — Lightspark, 2026
Solution 03
DrukShift Wallet — Built for This Problem
The DrukShift Wallet prototype was built specifically to solve Problems 2 and 3. It gives merchants a simple app showing every incoming payment clearly confirmed in Ngultrum with a live rate — removing the confusion that stops merchants from actively promoting crypto payments to tourists.
🇧🇹 Built as part of this internship research — try it yourself using the Wallet button in the navigation above.
Solution 04
Awareness at Point of Entry
A simple information card in multiple languages at Paro International Airport arrival hall — given to every tourist alongside their visa — would reach 100 percent of incoming visitors before they even reach a merchant. This requires no new technology just communication.
Solution 05
Merchant Training by DK Bank
DK Bank and the Department of Tourism should run a short hands-on training for all registered merchants — showing them exactly how to receive a payment, confirm it in Ngultrum and encourage tourists to use it. Currently merchants were onboarded with a QR code but nothing else.
The Core Truth
"The technology works. Merchants already receive Ngultrum automatically. The only real unsolved problems are that tourists do not know about it and merchants do not promote it — and both come down to awareness and confidence, not technology."
