SomPel Tech ยท Bhutan Lifestyle & Wellbeing 2026

Improve your sleep quality and day energy level

WHO?
Sonam Peldon
Gedu College of Business Studies intern & Data Practitioner ยท Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd.

I am exploring how lifestyle habits affect health and wellbeing. This helps examine how daily routines โ€” sleep, work, and screen use โ€” differ between urban and rural residents in Bhutan, and how these differences influence sleep quality and daytime energy. Using these insights, I aim to develop evidence-based tools, like a website and mobile app, to help individuals and communities improve their daily habits and overall wellbeing.

A balanced life brings a peaceful mind.

SomPel Tech ยท Founded 2026
Origin Story

SomPel Tech was founded during a six-month internship at Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd., where I was encouraged to create a company identity as part of a project.

At first, I proposed the name Phendhey Tech, inspired by the Dzongkha word "Phendhey" โ€” meaning wellness โ€” combined with technology. However, I later chose a more personal and meaningful name: SomPel Tech.

Who did we survey?

We collected 366 responses from people living in urban, rural, and semi-urban areas of Bhutan. After removing one response from a non-resident, 358 were used for analysis. Most people who responded were from cities โ€” which reflects how Bhutan's population is shifting towards urban areas.

How do city and village life differ?

Urban people tend to work a bit longer and do more mental work (like office jobs). Rural people use screens a little more before bed and sleep slightly longer โ€” but the sleep difference is so small it barely matters. The real difference is what kind of work people do, not how long they sleep.

What actually affects your sleep?

We looked at three habits to see if they help or hurt sleep quality and daily energy. Think of it simply: Red = bad for sleep, Grey = no real effect, Green = slightly good.

How each habit affects sleep & energy
Habit ๐Ÿ™๏ธ Urban ๐ŸŒพ Rural
๐Ÿ“ฑ Screen use before bed ๐Ÿ˜ด Hurts sleep ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜ด Hurts more
โฐ Longer work hours ๐Ÿ˜ No effect ๐Ÿ˜ด Mild harm
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Sleeping longer ๐Ÿ˜ No effect ๐Ÿ™‚ Slightly helps
๐Ÿ’ก Plain English: Putting your phone down before bed is the single most important thing you can do for better sleep โ€” in both cities and villages.
04

What do people think helps them sleep better?

We asked people: "What habits do you believe improve your sleep?" Four clear answers came up again and again. Here they are, ranked by how often people mentioned them:

๐Ÿ† Top habits people believe improve sleep
๐Ÿ“ต Less screen time before bed
#1
๐Ÿ˜Œ Stress-free environment
#2
๐Ÿ•™ Same bedtime every night
#3
๐Ÿง˜ Relaxing before sleep
#4
Ranked by frequency of mention across all 358 respondents
05

What do people want in a sleep app?

We asked people which features they would most want if a sleep app existed. They wanted things that are simple and work on their existing phone โ€” not expensive gadgets or complicated systems.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Most wanted app features
๐Ÿ”• Reminders to put phone down
#1
๐Ÿ“Š Sleep tracking
#2
๐ŸŒ™ Bedtime routine tips
#3
๐Ÿ“… Daily schedule help
#4
Respondents preferred phone-based tools over wearables or complex devices
๐Ÿ’ก What this means: People don't want anything fancy. They just want a simple app on the phone they already own that quietly reminds them to sleep better.
06

Key Takeaways โ€” The Big Picture

Here is what all five findings add up to, in plain language:

๐Ÿ“ฑ
Screen use is the biggest problem. It hurts sleep quality and daytime energy for everyone โ€” city and village alike.
๐Ÿ™๏ธ
City and village lifestyles are measurably different. Urban people work more; rural people use screens more at night. Both groups struggle with sleep โ€” just for different reasons.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ
Sleeping longer doesn't automatically fix things. How well you sleep matters more than how long.
๐Ÿ“ฒ
People want a simple phone app. No fancy gadgets โ€” just something easy that fits into daily life.
โœ…
Over 95% are open to a wellness app. The demand is real. The main barriers are awareness and access โ€” not interest.
Market Readiness

Is Bhutan Ready for Wellness Tools?

๐Ÿ“ฑ

We asked participants the question.

"If there was a app to help you sleep better and track your daily habits โ€” would you use it?" The answer was overwhelmingly positive.

โœ…
58.42%
Ready to use it now
๐Ÿค”
36.6%
Open, but need convincing
โŒ
4.96%
Not interested

"Would you use a sleep or wellness app?" โ€” 358 respondents ยท Bhutan 2026

95%+
said Yes or Maybe โ€” that is not a maybe market, that is a waiting market

๐Ÿค” Who are the "Maybe" people?

They are not skeptics โ€” they are not sure. Most haven't tried a wellness tool before. That 36.6% is not a wall. It's a door waiting to be opened with the right message.

๐Ÿ’ก
What do people actually want? A sleep tracking app on the phone they already own โ€” plus a benchmarking website to compare their habits with others. No new devices. No complicated setup. Just something that works quietly in the background.

๐ŸŽฏ The opportunity is clear.

The demand exists. The awareness doesn't โ€” yet. Most people in Bhutan don't know a local sleep tool is even possible. That gap between wanting better sleep and knowing how to get it is exactly where SomPel Tech steps in.
