Sonam Peldon
Gedu College of Business Studies intern & Data Practitioner · Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd.

I was an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Business Intelligence and Information Systems, majoring in Financial Engineering at Gedu College of Business Studies .

As part of the academic requirements, students were required to complete a six-month internship to gain practical experience and apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies. Accordingly, I joined Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd. as a Data Practitioner intern.

During the internship, we were assigned to undertake a project based on our area of interest. I chose to explore the issue of sleep quality and daytime energy levels, as many individuals, including myself, experienced fatigue despite spending adequate time resting. These challenges were often linked to irregular routines, excessive screen use before bedtime, and imbalanced work and sleep patterns.

To address this, it focused on developing a data-driven tool that helped individuals improve their sleep quality and overall energy levels through personalized insights and recommendations based on user input.

Building on these insights, I developed a web-based solutions designed to help individuals and communities better understand their habits and make informed improvements to their daily routines and overall well-being.

01

Who did we survey?

We collected 366 responses from individuals living in urban, rural, and semi-urban areas of Bhutan. After removing one response from a non-resident, 358 were used for analysis. Most people who responded were from cities which reflects how Bhutan's population is shifting towards urban areas.

How do city and village life differ?

Urban people tend to work a bit longer and do more mental work (like office jobs). Rural people use screens a little more before bed and sleep slightly longer but the sleep difference is so small it barely matters. The real difference is what kind of work people do, not how long they sleep.

03

What actually affects your sleep?

We looked at three habits to see if they help or hurt sleep quality and daily energy. Think of it simply: Red = bad for sleep, Grey = no real effect, Green = slightly good.

How each habit affects sleep & energy
Habit Urban Rural
Screen use before bed 😴 Hurts sleep 😴😴 Hurts more
Longer work hours 😐 No effect 😴 Mild harm
Sleeping longer 😐 No effect 🙂 Slightly helps
Putting your phone down before bed is the single most important thing you can do for better sleep in both cities and villages.
04

What do people think helps them sleep better?

We asked people: "What habits do you believe improve your sleep?" Four clear answers came up again and again. Here they are, ranked by how often people mentioned them:

Top habits people believe improve sleep
Less screen time before bed
29.209%
Stress-free environment
25.612%
Same bedtime every night
23.885%
Relaxing before sleep
21.295%
Ranked by frequency of mention across all 358 respondents
05

Market Readiness. Is Bhutan Ready for Wellness Tools?

We asked participants: "Would you use a sleep or wellness tool?" 358 respondents · Bhutan 2026

58.42%
Ready to use it now
36.6%
Open, but need convincing
4.96%
Not interested
95%+
said Yes or Maybe which is not a maybe market, that is a waiting market
🤔 Why are there more "Maybe" people? They are not sure. Most haven't tried a wellness tool before. That 36.6% is not a wall, it's a door waiting to be opened with the right message.
🎯 The opportunity is clear. The demand exists. Most people in Bhutan don't know a sleep tool is even possible. That gap between wanting better sleep and knowing how to get it is exactly where SomPel Tech steps in.

Key Takeaways

Here is what all the findings add up to, in plain language:

1
Screen use is the biggest problem. It hurts sleep quality and daytime energy for everyone.
2
City and village lifestyles are measurably different. Urban people work more; rural people use screens more at night. Both groups struggle with sleep.
3
Sleeping longer doesn't automatically fix things. How well people sleep matters more than how long.
4
People want a simple tool. No fancy gadgets, just something easy that fits into daily life.
5
Over 95% are open to a wellness app. The demand is real. The main barriers are awareness and access.
