A data-driven survey project by Kinzang Choden โ 3rd Year Business Intelligence Student interning at Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd, examining whether Bhutanese adults are prepared to adopt cryptocurrency โ aligned with Bhutan's GNH values.
I am a 3rd year Business Intelligence student currently doing my internship at Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd (BDS) โ Bhutan's leading data science company focused on building data literacy and analytical capability across the country.
During my internship I designed and developed this project from scratch โ from collecting 113 survey responses, cleaning the data using Python, building 12 interactive Tableau visualizations, aligning findings with Bhutan's GNH values, and publishing everything as a live website on GitHub Pages.
This project is called DrukShift โ named after Bhutan's identity as the Land of the Thunder Dragon and our shift toward the future of digital finance. I believe cryptocurrency readiness in Bhutan is not just a technology question โ it is a happiness question.
Bhutan measures progress through happiness โ not just money. This story maps cryptocurrency readiness across 6 GNH domains โ Education, Living Standards, Psychological Wellbeing, Governance, Community Vitality and Time Use.
Based on 113 survey responses, these five targeted solutions address the real barriers identified in the data โ from education gaps to scam vulnerability.
Run targeted crypto literacy programs for 35-54 and 55+ age groups. Young people need digital platforms. Older generations need community workshops and face to face education in local languages.
Poor internet is barrier number one. The government must expand reliable and affordable internet to rural and semi-urban areas before pushing crypto adoption. Connectivity is a prerequisite โ not a luxury.
The 35-44 group has the highest trust and lowest security concern โ the perfect target for scammers. Launch dedicated scam awareness campaigns with simple clear messaging about red flags and how to stay safe.
People are already asking for government support. Create clear cryptocurrency regulations, establish consumer protection laws, and build a transparent framework. Strong government leadership is the single most powerful accelerator of adoption in Bhutan.
The majority said Maybe โ not No. These undecided people are waiting to see crypto work in real life. Encourage local shops and small businesses to accept crypto as payment. When people see their favorite restaurant using crypto safely โ it becomes real, relatable and trustworthy. Change starts in communities, not government offices.
Using age groups as a generational proxy, this story explores how crypto readiness changes across generations โ and what it means for Bhutan's digital future.
Four critical insights from 113 survey responses
Average readiness score of 12.75 out of 16 โ Bhutan shows strong foundational readiness for cryptocurrency adoption aligned with GNH values.
96% have heard of cryptocurrency but most only have basic understanding โ a critical knowledge gap exists between awareness and true readiness.
Poor internet connection is the single biggest barrier to adoption โ especially critical for rural communities who remain underserved.
Age is a stronger predictor of readiness than location โ younger groups show consistently higher scores regardless of where they live.
