This research project was carried out as part of my internship at Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd. — exploring the intersection of data analytics, digital assets, and Bhutan's emerging financial ecosystem through the lens of TER, the world's first sovereign gold-backed digital token.
During my internship at Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd., I undertook a comprehensive research project on TER — Bhutan's historic sovereign gold-backed digital token launched on December 17, 2025. As a Data Practitioner, I applied quantitative methods, survey analysis, and market data modelling to understand TER's real-world stability, investor trust, and adoption barriers.
The project was motivated by a genuine personal interest: I am a TER investor myself, and wanted to combine academic rigour with real investment experience to answer one core question — can a gold-backed digital asset truly deliver greater stability than volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum?
"Bhutan sits at a unique crossroads — a country that measures success by Gross National Happiness, now building the world's first sovereign gold-backed digital economy. This project captures that moment through data."

Dedicated to Ugyen Norlha — the prosperity manifestation of Guru Rinpoche — the Choeten was built to commemorate the birth of HRH Gyalsem Sonam Yangden Wangchuck. It houses 27 deity statues on the ground floor and ~34,000 Tongkus on the upper floor, along with the Kangyur and Tenjur Buddhist texts. Unique wall sculptures of the "Lhatsho" (gathering of prosperity deities) are said to be found nowhere else in Bhutan. As GMC grows, this Choeten is expected to lay a strong spiritual foundation — ensuring the city's transformation is guided by faith and Bhutanese values.

Original primary survey data from TER investors and potential users — covering awareness, trust, financial engagement, and the real reasons people hesitate to invest.
Out of 125 respondents — overall financial market participation
Most respondents are not yet engaged in financial markets — reflecting limited exposure or cautious behaviour. However, the 33.6% of active investors represent an immediate audience for TER. If awareness and trust increase, the larger non-investing group is a significant untapped opportunity.
Respondent willingness to invest in gold — directly relevant to TER
A strong majority show positive or potential interest in gold. Since TER is directly backed by physical gold, this finding is critical — it suggests that linking a digital asset to gold increases confidence and acceptance, because gold already holds strong credibility as a store of value.
Level of awareness about TER among respondents
General awareness exists but is mostly basic-level. TER is not completely unknown — but deep understanding is still limited. There is strong potential for targeted education campaigns.
Trust distribution — even with basic awareness, confidence is high
People may trust the concept of a gold-backed digital asset even if they don't fully understand it yet — a powerful signal for TER's market positioning.
Respondents' future intention to invest in TER
Over 80% show positive intention to hold TER in the future. Hesitation is relatively low. Market readiness appears promising — if awareness improves, strong adoption is very achievable.
Trust, perceived risk, and preference for traditional financial systems are the biggest barriers to digital asset adoption. Improving financial literacy and building trust could significantly increase adoption. Notably, the 22.22% who prefer gold-backed traditional assets are TER's most natural target audience — since TER IS backed by physical gold.
An overwhelming 88.24% prefer gold-backed digital assets for long-term value. This strongly indicates that combining digital technology with gold's stability increases investor confidence compared to traditional cryptocurrencies — validating TER's core proposition.
A time-series comparison of Gold, Bitcoin, and Ethereum prices from 2020 to 2025. Since TER is fully backed by physical gold (Source: ter.bt), gold's historical volatility serves as the closest available benchmark for TER's projected price behaviour.
Bitcoin shows the highest volatility, with sharp rises in 2021 and 2024–2025, and a major correction in 2022. Ethereum follows a similar pattern at a smaller scale. Gold remains relatively stable throughout, with gradual upward movement and far fewer sharp fluctuations. The 2022 crypto downturn is clearly visible — a broad market-wide correction that did not significantly affect gold. The 2023 recovery phase marks where crypto markets began rebounding after the crash. Gold demonstrates long-term stability, while cryptocurrencies provide higher growth potential with significantly higher risk.
Ethereum has the highest volatility overall, peaking sharply in 2021. Bitcoin follows a similar pattern, also peaking in 2021 before both drop sharply in 2023 and partially recover in 2024–2025. Gold maintains consistently low, near-flat volatility across all six years — hugging the bottom of the chart throughout. Crypto assets experience large volatility swings year-to-year, while gold remains stable — supporting the projection that TER, being fully gold-pegged, would inherit similar low-volatility characteristics. Note: TER launched Dec 2025; empirical TER volatility data is not yet available.

TER launched December 17, 2025 — insufficient historical price data exists to calculate empirical volatility. Since each TER = 0.01g of physical gold (ter.bt), its price is structurally pegged to gold. Projected volatility is therefore approximated from gold's 5-year historical data. Source: gmc.bt · ter.bt

TER's gold backing delivers real stability. The survey data shows distrust of digital assets is the biggest barrier — trust-building is as important as education.
"Rooted in Bhutan's spirit of trust, integrity, and responsible finance, TER embodies the nation's commitment to inclusive, sustainable innovation — bridging the ancient treasure of gold with the digital economy of tomorrow."
— GMC Official Statement · TER Launch, December 17, 2025 · Bhutan's 118th National DayMarket data shows gold's annualised volatility is dramatically lower than Bitcoin or Ethereum. Since TER is fully backed by physical gold (ter.bt), it is projected to inherit this same low-volatility profile — though empirical TER data remains limited given its December 2025 launch. Cryptocurrencies outperform during expansion phases but suffer large corrections during downturns. Gold acts as a stabilising asset across market cycles — and TER is built to carry that same characteristic into the digital economy.
The survey data reveals that 66.4% of respondents do not yet invest in financial assets — a significant untapped audience if awareness grows. Meanwhile, 78 respondents showed willingness to invest in gold, directly validating TER's gold-backed approach. Trust, perceived risk, and preference for traditional financial systems are the biggest adoption barriers.
Most encouragingly, over 80% expressed positive intention to hold TER, and 88.24% prefer gold-backed digital assets for long-term value — validating the core research hypothesis that combining gold's stability with digital accessibility is TER's key competitive advantage.
Address the 33.33% who "don't trust digital assets" — through audits, reserve reporting, and RMA regulatory clarity. Trust is the single largest barrier.
The 22.22% preferring "traditional options like gold" ARE TER's natural audience. TER is backed by gold — messaging must make this explicit and immediate.
Those who find digital assets "too risky" need to see TER's significantly lower volatility compared to Bitcoin — the volatility chart tells a powerful, convincing story.
The 11.11% who "don't understand" are the most fixable barrier — targeted demos and explainers through DK Bank's existing channels can close this gap.
How TER Creates Value
While this project focuses on analysing TER through historical data and investor perception, its significance extends beyond research. The insights generated here contribute to how TER can be understood, trusted, and adopted within Bhutan's emerging digital financial ecosystem.
This platform acts as a bridge between complex financial data and real-world decision-making. By translating analysis into clear and intuitive insights, it makes TER more accessible to different stakeholders.
A clearer understanding of TER's stability and risk profile helps individuals make more informed decisions about digital asset allocation, especially within a gold-backed framework.
Insights into trust levels, awareness, and adoption barriers provide evidence-based guidance for shaping digital finance strategies and strengthening TER's role in Bhutan's economy.
By simplifying financial data into visual insights, the platform makes TER easier to understand for a wider audience — including those with little or no prior investment experience.
In emerging environments such as Gelephu Mindfulness City, where new digital financial systems are being explored, these insights can support more informed and purposeful decision-making.
As TER continues to develop, this project could evolve into practical tools that extend beyond research:
A real-time platform combining volatility analysis, sentiment data, and adoption metrics to support smarter investment decisions.
A visual reporting layer that translates analytical findings into clear, policy-ready insights for institutions and regulators.
An educational space designed to improve understanding of digital assets and reduce barriers related to knowledge and trust.
A data-driven component embedded within the financial ecosystem of Gelephu Mindfulness City, providing real-time context for TER usage and performance.

Design intent: Balance is hidden by default. The privacy banner is the first thing users see — setting up the trust promise before any amount is shown.
Design intent: Location context (GMC Commercial District) reassures the user they're scanning a legitimate merchant in the correct zone.
★ The trust moment: The gold backing line — "0.0128g gold" — is the critical design element. Balance is deliberately absent. Only the payment amount is shown.
Design intent: Karma sees only his outgoing payment. Deki's auto-save amount is private — only she sees it on her merchant dashboard.
Design intent: The auto-save feature is Deki's private incentive. The gold (Au) icon reinforces value. This is the merchant's reason to set everything up.
These screens represent the DK Bank TER Wallet prototype v2, designed around the user story of Karma and Deki. Core design principles: (1) balance hidden by default to protect financial privacy, (2) gold backing shown prominently at the trust moment, (3) auto-save is merchant-only and never visible to customers, (4) payment confirmation PIN — not biometric — to be device-agnostic, (5) both sides see only what is relevant to them.
The optional auto-save in gold-backed TER (not fiat) is what separates this system. When the merchant enables it, every payment automatically grows their savings in TER — preserving gold-backed value. This is the incentive that motivates a busy merchant to do the work of setting up a merchant wallet.
Steps 1, 8, and 9 already exist in the TER app — Solana blockchain broadcast and TX ID recording are core infrastructure already built.
Gold oracle query and simultaneous confirmation exist but need upgrading — the oracle needs to be hooked into the payment UI, and simultaneous confirmation needs merchant-side testing.
QR scanner, conversion UI, confirmation screen with balance-hiding, user authorisation, merchant dashboard, auto-save feature — these are the new builds that complete the TER-Pay experience.
