Tashi, Sonam, and Pema sat on chairs around a small round table in the busy Tobgay canteen of Gedu College of Business Studies (GCBS). It was their usual tea break spot: warm suja in hand, plates of momos on the table, and the soft hum of students chatting after class.
The three of them had just come out of their financial management lecture. The topic had been budgeting and personal financial control, and now, unknowingly, they were about to test those ideas in real life.
Tashi, who also worked as a Class Representative, was staring at his phone with a slightly stressed expression.
Tashi"I collected SEMSO contributions from five of my self-funded mates yesterday. Now I just want to confirm one payment… but mBOB only shows the last few transactions. The one I need isn't even old... it's just from yesterday. Now I have to request a statement and wait for the email."
Sonam"Same problem. It's like the app has the data but not in a way that helps us quickly."
Just then, Pema joined them, pulling a chair closer.
Pema"You both look like you're fighting with your bank."
Tashi"We kind of are."
Pema smiled and leaned forward.
Pema"You know… what if mBOB actually worked like how we studied in class today?"
Tashi"How?"
Pema" Okay... Let's start with expenses. Imagine when you make a payment, the app automatically suggests a category."
💡 Feature idea: Smart Categorization
If you transfer money to a friend for food, the app could show options like 'Food & Drinks', 'Fund Collection (SEMSO)', or 'Personal Transfer' based on the what you type in purpose or you can just click to category that relates to the purpse of your transaction.
Tashi"That would save time."
Sonam"Yes! and... it would actually help us understand where our money goes. Right now, it's just numbers... no meaning behind them."
Tashi"But what about saving? Everything is mixed in one account. It's hard to separate money mentally."
Pema"That's where goal-based pockets come in. Imagine within your main account, you can create custom mini-accounts - SEMSO or Fund Collection, Food & Drinks, Travel, Education... and keep them only as long as you need.."
Sonam"Something like physical wallet with multiple pocket... sounds good!"
💡 Feature idea: Goal-Based Pockets
Create a SEMSO pocket just for this semester, then remove it later. When you make a payment, the app asks: "Which pocket do you want to use?" - like choosing which wallet to pay from.
Sonam"Imagine opening the app and seeing dashboard charts showing how much you spent on food, travel, or SEMSO."
Tashi"That would actually make us aware of our habits. Not just checking balance, but understanding behaviour."
Tashi"And please... improve the mini statement. Why only 10 transactions? I just want to see yesterday's transactions properly, especially when I'm handling money for others."
Sonam"They should let us filter by date - today, yesterday, or even increase it to 50 or 100 transactions."
They paused, finishing their tea and momo. Around them, students continued their conversations, unaware that a simple tea break had turned into a powerful discussion on the future of mobile banking.
Pema"If these features were added, mBOB wouldn't just be a banking app… it would become a smart financial companion, especially for students like us."
Sonam"We learned budgeting in class… but if mBOB evolves like this, we can actually practice it in real life."
Tashi"And that's when banking becomes more than just transactions."
Pema"It becomes understanding, control… and smarter living."
And with that, they walked out of the GCBS canteen, carrying not just ideas, but a vision of what modern banking could truly become in this digital era.
