A college student's frustration that became a mission.

Hello, I'm Hema Luitel. Before you explore this website, I'd like to share the story behind why I created it. Ngul Yoen was not built simply as an internship project: It was not just built as a project, but as a solution to a real problem I personally faced as a banking customer and student. ...

When I first started college, managing my finances was much harder than I expected. No matter how careful I tried to be, my account balance seemed to disappear quickly, and I had little understanding of where my money was actually going. The mini statements provided by banks showed very limited information, while full bank statements were often too lengthy and difficult to interpret.

At the same time, I faced another challenge: choosing the right bank.
Like many students and young professionals, I didn't know which bank would best suit my needs. There were several banks to choose from, each offering different services, but it was difficult to compare them and understand which one aligned with my preferences. Even the bank I was using lacked some of the features I wished it had, such as better spending insights, budgeting tools, and personalized financial guidance.

At that time, I wished there was a simple tool where I could upload my bank statement and instantly receive clear insights into my expenses, helping me understand my financial behaviour and make smarter decisions.

That experience stayed with me. Later, when I started this internship at Bhutan Data Scientists Pvt. Ltd. as a data practitioner, I was asked to choose a domain of interest. I immediately remembered this struggle. So, I chose banking and personal finance because I had personally experienced these challenges. Moreover, I was curious about others too:
How do other students manage their money?
What factors influence people's choice of banks?
Are they satisfied with their banking services?
And most importantly - can these problems be solved?

I began exploring real customer experiences, analysing banking choices, identifying common challenges and studied the services offered by different banks. Through this journey, I discovered that many people struggle with similar issues like I did: lack of clarity, poor banking knowledge, and limited tools to make informed decisions.

That's when I decided to build this platform, Ngul Yoen: designed to act as a personal financial companion that helps users compare banks, stay informed about banking services, gain insights from their bank statements, and make smarter financial decisions with confidence. Most importantly, it aims to guide people like me, those who are unsure which bank best fits their needs and who want banking services that truly match their financial goals and lifestyle.

What started as my personal problem has now become a solution I hope can help many others navigate their financial journey with greater clarity, confidence, and control.

Ngul Yoen: ngul (money) and yoen (scope) in Dzongkha, is a student project that analyses what drives banking choices in Bhutan. It studies four core factors: trust, service quality, accessibility, and ease of use, across 6 banks and 111 respondents, turning raw survey data into insights and tools that help customers make better financial decisions.

During this internship period (Dec 2025 - Jun 2026) I was in my third year at GCBS, studying a Bachelor's degree in Business Intelligence with a major in Financial Engineering, where data analysis, business strategy, and technology meet. This project was my chance to apply that blend to a real-world problem: understanding how and why Bhutanese banking customers choose their banks.
