The story behind this platform

Where did all my money go?

A college student's frustration that became a mission.

Hello, I'm Hema Luitel. Before you explore this website, I want to share the story behind why I created it: this platform was not just built as a project, but as a solution to a real problem I personally faced. ...

When I first started college, I struggled to manage my money. No matter how careful I thought I was, my balance would disappear quickly, and I had no clear idea where it was going. Bank mini statements showed too little, and full statements were too complex to understand.

At that moment, I wished my bank provided better tools: something that could help me understand my spending patterns, manage my budget, and make smarter financial decisions. I also wished if there could be a tool where I can just upload my bank statement and get a clear insights on my debit expenses.

That experience stayed with me. Later, when I started this internship at Bhutan Data Scientists as a data practitioner, I was asked to choose a domain of interest. I immediately remembered this struggle. It made me curious about others too:
How do other students manage their money?
What factors influence people's choice of banks?
Are they satisfied with their banking services?
And most importantly - can these problems be solved?

I began exploring real customer experiences, analysing banking choices, and identifying common challenges. Through this journey, I realised that many people struggle with similar issues: lack of clarity, poor banking knowledge, and limited tools to make informed decisions.

That's when I decided to build this platform, Ngul Yoen: designed to act as a personal financial assistant helping users stay updated with banking information, compare banks, analyse their statements, and make better financial decisions with confidence.

What started as my personal problem has now become a solution I hope can help many others.
The problem
No visibility into personal spending habits
The question
How do others manage their banking needs?
The mission

The project – Ngul Yoen

What it is, why it was built, and what it covers

Ngul Yoen: ngul (money) and yoen (scope) in Dzongkha, is a student project that analyses what drives banking choices in Bhutan. It studies four core factors: trust, service quality, accessibility, and ease of use, across 6 banks and 111 respondents, turning raw survey data into insights and tools that help customers make better financial decisions.

Hema Luitel 3rd-year · Business Intelligence (Financial Engineering) · Gedu College of Business Studies

During this internship period (Dec 2025 - Jun 2026) I was in my third year at GCBS, studying a Bachelor's degree in Business Intelligence with a major in Financial Engineering, where data analysis, business strategy, and technology meet. This project was my chance to apply that blend to a real-world problem: understanding how and why Bhutanese banking customers choose their banks.
